Lakhpat - Kutch Holidays

In the far north-west corner of Kutch, 135 km from Bhuj, is Lakhpat. The name Lakhpat ironically means millionaires town, and indeed, prior to 1819, it was a thriving and prosperous port. Lakhpat’s fortunes dived when the devastating 1819 earthquake hit. It caused the Indus River to move 50km to the west, and as a consequence, the great ran dried up along with it, Lakhpat’s economy. Today, it exists as a near-deserted ghost town, surrounded by a dilapidated fort as the wall, standing dry and virtually abandoned for nearly 200 years.
